Lila is a traditional handmade kuhl prepared from purified oil extracted from bovine leg bone marrow. The marrow is slowly rendered at low temperatures over extended periods to allow separation of impurities while preserving the delicate lipid profile of the oil. Through repeated gentle refinement, a clean, lightweight marrow oil is obtained that is suitable for application to the sensitive eye area. This refined oil is then used as a fuel source: pure cotton threads are gently burned as candle wicks, producing a soft, controlled smoke over many hours. The resulting fine carbon soot is gradually collected through this slow process, allowing layers of purified carbon to accumulate. The soot is carefully gathered by hand in a clean environment to minimize contamination and reduce the risk of eye irritation. It is then transferred into thoroughly cleaned brass containers that are examined to ensure no residual substances remain.
